Preview by type
What the Preview pane shows for each file type and what you can do with it. Which formats are supported and how far is on the “Formats” page.
| Type | What it shows, what you can do |
|---|---|
| Images, including TGA, which Windows has no codec for | Loupe on the left button, Ctrl+wheel to zoom in steps; large images shrink to fit, small ones aren't stretched |
| Photoshop (PSD, PSB) | The composite image, without layers, with the loupe, ratings and helpers, like photos. A file without a composite image or over 36 megapixels: from the small preview inside the file |
| HEIC / HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL, WebP | The image, correctly rotated. If Windows is missing an extension from the Microsoft Store, the pane says which one, and a button opens its page in the Store. HEIC needs “HEIF Image Extensions” (free) and “HEVC Video Extensions” (paid, unless your PC's manufacturer installed it); the other extensions are free |
| SVG | The image; the </> button at the bottom switches to the markup and back. A file over 1 MB is shown as markup right away |
| RAW (CR3, CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG…) | The embedded preview, instantly, rotated per EXIF. The RAW button turns on full development of the sensor data: the preview shows right away, and the developed frame replaces it when ready; the mode stays on for the whole folder. A RAW file without an embedded preview is opened by a Windows codec; if there's none, the pane names the extension you need from the Store |
| GIF, WebP | The image with the loupe, like other images; animated ones in a player |
| Video | A player: play and pause, repeat (on from the start for clips under three seconds), seeking; Ctrl+wheel to zoom 2× and 4×. Below it, a table read from the file itself (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI): resolution, codec, color depth, HDR, frame rate, bitrate, up to four audio tracks, subtitles. WebM, OGV and whatever the built-in player can't open play in the system player. If neither can open it, the pane names the codec, and if an extension from the Store is missing (HEVC, AV1, VP9, MPEG-2, Ogg), its name and a button for its page |
| Music | Cover art, title, artist, album, year, a player, and a line about the audio: codec, bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, channels. Tags are read from MP3, FLAC, M4A and M4B, WAV, Ogg and Opus; for other formats, the name and duration. The cover art comes from the file, or else from an image next to it (Cover.jpg, folder.jpg, front.*, one with the same name, or the only image in the folder). Cyrillic tags in Windows-1251 are read correctly |
| 3D (STL, OBJ, glTF, GLB, PLY, 3MF, FBX) | The model at a three-quarter angle: drag to rotate, wheel to zoom; Wander remembers a model you rotated, and the thumbnail shows it the same way. Triangle and vertex counts at the bottom. Colors come from .mtl and glTF; textures aren't loaded. 3MF includes slicer projects, Bambu Studio and Orca among them; FBX, both binary and text. DAE and DXF aren't supported |
| Fonts (TTF, OTF, TTC) | Sample text in sizes from 12 to 48, the letters and digits the font has (for icon and symbol fonts, their characters), name, style, version, author. The font file stays free: you can rename or delete it without leaving the preview |
| Spreadsheets (CSV, TSV, XLSX, XLSM, ODS) | A grid: sheets as tabs, columns as letters, rows as numbers, dates and percentages as in a spreadsheet app; long text wraps to the column width. The first 1000 rows and 100 columns are shown. The </> button shows CSV and TSV as text |
| Text | The encoding is detected automatically, including 1251 and 866. A large file is shown from the start, with “… showing the start of the file, 12 MB in total” at the bottom. Subtitles, playlists, .nfo, contacts and calendars are shown as text too |
| Code | Syntax highlighting: common languages, bat and cmd, sh, shaders, YAML, Unity and Godot assets, .diff and .patch |
| PDF, HTML, MHT, Markdown | The rendered document; in Markdown, tables, - [x], ~~strikethrough~~, links, and footnotes. The pane doesn't go online: external images and scripts aren't loaded |
| FB2, RTF | Cover, title, authors, description, and text (a long book from the beginning); RTF with fonts, tables, and images |
| Word, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, EPUB | The document's text, marked “Text only; formatting isn't shown”; an old plain-text .doc, simply as text |
| Programs and libraries | An info card: version, product, publisher, platform (x64, console, .NET…), signature (whose, and whether it's valid), copyright. The signature is checked a moment after the rest; for a file over 200 MB, only when you click “Check”; a checked signature is remembered until the file changes |
Shortcut .lnk |
The target's contents; at the bottom, the target's name and “Go to target”. A broken shortcut is reported as such |
| A file with no extension or the wrong one | By its contents: a PDF named scan.png as a document, a video clip.dat in a player |
| Drive | Volume label, file system, and a usage bar (yellow from 85%, red from 95%) |
| Folder | A breakdown: files, folders, size, the largest types with bars. The numbers grow as the scan goes on; leaving the folder stops it |
