Culling photos

You can quickly cull a whole shoot in Wander, without an editor: find the misses, compare near-duplicates, rate and keep the best, then sort and process what doesn't need your attention. Ratings are saved to companion files next to the photos, and Adobe apps, darktable and RawTherapee understand them.

  1. Open a folder of photos: it opens in Gallery with large thumbnails, and RAW files are shown from their embedded previews. Pick a dark or gray background in the toolbar.
  2. Weed out the misses. Turn on the review helpers with the buttons at the bottom of the Preview pane: focus peaking and sharpness appear right on the thumbnails, and clipping shows clipped highlights.
  3. Compare similar frames: select two, and they appear side by side in the Preview pane, with the loupe showing the same spot on both. Enter opens the pair in full screen, and Shift+arrow compares a photo with its neighbor.
  4. Rate: digits 1–5 give stars to the selected photos, Shift+digit sets a color label, 0 clears the rating, and Ctrl+Z undoes. Learn more on the “Ratings and labels” page.
  5. Pick the best: the star filter in the toolbar shows the photos you picked.
  6. Sort and convert your picks right away. Select the filtered photos (Ctrl+A) and drag them with the right mouse button onto another folder: in the tree, in Bookmarks or among the files. In the menu at the drop point, you can copy or move them, or choose “Convert”, for example to save RAW previews as JPEG: the result lands in that folder, and the originals stay where they are. Learn more on the “Conversion” page.
