Companion files
A companion is a file that describes another file: Sprite.png.meta in Unity, IMG.CR2.xmp or IMG.CR2.pp3 for a photo.
Wander shows it as one item with the main file, and moves, copies, renames and deletes it along with that file; Ctrl+Z brings back the whole group.
Duplicates made in darktable (IMG_01.CR2.xmp, IMG_02.CR2.xmp) also travel with the photo, as long as there's no IMG_01.CR2 file next to them.
| Companion | What the Preview pane shows |
|---|---|
Unity .meta |
The GUID with a “Copy” button, the importer type |
.xmp, .pp3 |
The rating and color label; you can change them: only one line of the file is edited, the rest is left untouched |
IMG.xmp next to IMG.CR2 and IMG.jpg counts as the RAW file's companion: moving the JPEG doesn't take it along.
If there are two JPEGs or two RAW files with the same name next to it, the companion stays a separate item: Wander doesn't try to guess its owner.
To see companions as separate files, clear “Show a file and its companions as one item” in “Settings” → “File list”.
