Folder panes
The Folders pane on the left holds two folder trees: “Bookmarks” at the top and “Computer” with your drives, phones and cameras below. Expanded branches stay expanded as you move around and after a restart.
Both trees hide and come back together: use the button to the left of “←”, “View” → “Folders pane”, or
Ctrl+B; the width is remembered.
Each tree collapses with the triangle in its header: a collapsed “Computer” moves to the bottom and gives its space to the bookmarks.
You can't collapse both at once: collapsing one expands the other.
Folder trees
- Click a row to open the folder; click the triangle
to expand or collapse it.
Alt+click on the triangle expands the folder together with its first-level subfolders; on an expanded folder, it collapses the whole subtree.- The open folder is shown in bold in the tree you opened it from.
- Archives appear in the tree among folders and expand the same way.
Bookmarks
- Add: drag a folder to the “+” zone below the bookmarks.
- On a USB drive, phone or camera: you can bookmark a folder on an external device too, by dragging it to the “+” zone the same way. A bookmark on a USB drive turns gray while the drive is unplugged, and a bookmark to a folder on a phone or camera shows up with the device's icon while the device is connected.
- Reorder or remove: use the
⋯button on the bookmark's row or right-click it;Ctrl+↑andCtrl+↓move a bookmark up and down. - Your own name:
⋯→ “Rename bookmark…”; an empty name brings back the folder's name. - Standard bookmarks are at the top: Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Recycle Bin. Desktop, Music and Videos can be turned on in “Settings” → “Folders and bookmarks”.
A bookmark to a folder that no longer exists turns gray and italic; clicking it offers to point to the new location or remove the bookmark. A bookmark on a network drive that's turned off turns gray the same way, standard ones included (“Documents” on a network folder); once the drive is back, the bookmark is normal again.
Delete on a bookmark you added asks what to remove: the bookmark or the folder itself (to the Recycle Bin).
On a standard bookmark, Delete leaves the folder alone and only removes the bookmark from the pane; you can bring it back in the same settings.
Computer
Click the word “Computer” in the pane's header to see your drives in the file area: name, capacity, free space, and a usage bar (yellow from 85%, red from 95%).
- USB drives and memory cards appear in the pane and disappear from it by themselves;
F5also rereads the list of drives. - “Eject” is the second item in a drive's menu. Wander first lets go of the drive itself, so it ejects on the first try; the status bar says “can be removed”, or, if another program holds the drive, names that program. You can also eject a USB drive from the tray, even with a folder on it open.
- If you unplug a USB drive with a folder on it open, Wander goes to the last folder you opened on the remaining drives.
Phone and camera
An Android phone or a camera connected over USB appears in “Computer” after the drives. Its folders open like folders on a drive, with thumbnails and the Preview pane.
- The phone must be unlocked, with “File transfer” chosen in its USB notification; otherwise, Wander reminds you in the status bar.
- Read-only: you can't delete, rename or paste files on the device yet.
- Copying to a drive: drag,
Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V, or “Copy to…” in the menu. The copy is checked against the original and keeps the date from the device, and a file that's already in the folder with the same size and date is skipped without asking.Ctrl+Zmoves what was copied to the Recycle Bin. - If the cable comes out or the camera turns off in the middle of copying, the operation waits up to 10 minutes for the device and continues from the same file once it's plugged back in.
- System folders of Android and empty standard folders are hidden like system files; “Protected operating system files” in “Settings” → “File list” shows them.
If the device's folders are read with errors, turn on “Read through the Windows shell” in “Settings” → “Debug and reset”: it's slower and without the device's own thumbnails.
From the keyboard
Ctrl+1moves the keyboard to the current folder tree, at the open folder; press it again to switch to the other tree (Bookmarks ↔ Computer).- The arrow keys,
PgUp/PgDnandHome/Endmove the cursor. ←and→collapse and expand a branch; typing letters jumps to a folder whose name starts with them.- A folder opens as soon as the cursor lands on it; holding down an arrow key opens only the folder where you stop.
The “Open folders as you move to them with the keyboard” checkbox is in “Settings” → “Folders and bookmarks” and in the right-click menu on empty space in the pane; with it cleared, a folder opens on
Enter.
Folder in the pane
- Right-click a folder in the tree or in Bookmarks to open that folder's menu: “Paste” puts files into it, “Rename” renames it, and “New folder” creates a folder inside it and goes there, with a box for the name already open.
F2renames the folder right in the pane; the open folder, history and bookmark follow the new name, andCtrl+Zrestores the old one.- While the keyboard is in the pane,
Delete,Ctrl+C,Ctrl+V,F2andAlt+Enteract on the folder under the cursor. - Right-clicking empty space in the pane opens quick settings: hidden and system files, opening folders from the keyboard, asking before deleting, changes from other programs, and “Settings”.
