Gallery
A view for images and photos: large thumbnails, ratings, an adjustable background.
Review helpers are turned on with the buttons at the bottom of the Preview pane and are drawn right on the thumbnails: focus peaking shows where the frame is sharp, the sharpness score
shows how sharp, and the clipping overlay
shows clipped highlights.
Lifting shadows and toning down highlights work here too.
You can spot a miss before you even open the photo.

How to use all this for culling is covered on the “Culling photos” page.
Gallery turns on automatically in a folder where more than 80% of the files are images (RAW files count; subfolders, companion files and backups don't), and in a folder that Windows marks as a pictures folder. When you leave such a folder, the usual view returns. The checkbox and threshold are in “Settings” → “View”. A view you choose manually is pinned to the folder like any other. An archive of photos opens in Gallery too.
The background is switched with three squares in the toolbar: light, gray or dark. Captions, overlays, the scroll bar and the Preview pane adapt to it. The light and dark themes each keep their own choice: in the dark theme, the background is dark out of the box, and “light” there is a shade darker than white. The brightness of the gray and dark backgrounds is set in “Settings” → “Interface”.
